MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS.
DTJNEDIN-LEITH WARD.
Mr T. M. Wilkiusoft addressed a meeting of ratepayers last evening at Cotter's Hotel, Mr T. Birch occupying the chair. The candidate said he came forward for tho purpose of having sorne thines remedied, and ho hoped that the ratepayers would jjive hiin credit for honesty of purpose. He had previously represented High Ward for two years In a satisfactory manner, and he wouldldo the same in regard to Leith Ward, if returned. Sinoe the Gas and Waterworks had passed into the possession of the Corporation, he did not think that the citizens had been suppliad aa well as. they Used to b* by the private companies. He expressed himself In favor of hj \ ving filter beds at the reservoir. The question of drainage was a very important one, and gome coinproh»ii*ive system, should be introduced, or disea.fo would be the result. He did not think the erection of a Town Hall should be proceeded with at present, as tho Corporation offices would suit for many to come, %n<\ the money be be'tter expended on drainage. At the conclusion of the i address a vote of confidence in Mr Wilkinson, as a i fit and proper person to represent Jjeith Ward in the City Council, was passed ou the motion of Mr Priug, seconded by Mr Hamann. Mr Grunt held a meetinar at the Oddfellows' Hall, Albany stieot, Vhen thaetS 1 wis a good attendance, and llr JVesedc-r occupied the chair. He referred to his past services as Councillor for the Ward for two years, ftcd then spoke op various municipal questions of interest. At the present time there w:is a large amount of improvements being effected in the streets, and in Leith Ward there was more fcerbing and channelling going on than in all the other part? of Dunodin together. Thev had a report of Mr Gordon, C.l}., upon drainage, but he considered that if they adopted proposed In that report, and were to carry the sewage to the Ocean it would bo a"dear job. He was in favor of a fish market being established in some central position in the City, and would also support the construction of tramways, provided Ihey wpro in the hands ct a prlyate company. Since be was elected to the Council, he had attended exactly 100 meetings of that body oi\t of 10Q actually held, and this lu addition to ooinniittee meetings. A hearty vote of confidence in Mr Grant was carried.
