We are compelled to hold over a quantity of local matter and correspondence. We have received several letters on various subjects, the writers of which have, however, not forwarded their names. The supporters of Mr Woodland's candidature for the Mayoral chair held a large meeting last night at their central committee rooms. Upwards of 100 electors were present, and Mr IT. S. Fish, jun., was called to the chair. Ward committees wore appointed, and the meeting separated after enthusiastically coming to a decision to work their hardest to return Mi- Woodland.
Mr Alcx.i-.id'dr Grant Lriia been appointed acting-manager of Otagb Railways during the temporary absence from the Cobony of Mr Wm. Conyers, who i 3 about tc* visit Melbourne and Sydney. In another column will bs found interest ing particulars of the financial tables laid upon the table of the He;use of Representatives yesterday, as telegraphed by our special correspondent at Wellington. " D.ivid Garrick" ard •' Our Boys" were repeated last night at the Princess's, and the same programme will do duty this and to-morrow evenings. On Friday these j popular comedies will be replaced by "So.rai toga."
At the Queen's Theatre last evening there was a good attendance to witness Mr Talbot's doui le impersonation of King James tbe Sixth and Trapbois in " King o' Scots." The drama went off admirably, and it is drawing so well that it will be again placed on the boards this evening. To?day's Government ' Gazette' contains a notification by h\s Deputy-Superintend nt removing Messrs J. F, TOundas' and W, Wood from being commissioners of tbe InyeipaigiU Waatti I Board and appointing Messrs Thpmas l>en r niston and Andrew Toshack iu their place, The nomination of councillors for Green Island tPpk place at noon to-day. Campbell were elected auditory, Tbe election for councillors was fixed for August 1. A serious accident occurred at the new Telegraph Office this morning, by which a man named Albert Perriman received injuries to both his legs—the main joint of the right knee being broken and 'he left ankle dislocated. Two other men 'received slight injuries. It appears that tuo timber of wbioh the scaffolding was composed was not strong enough to bear the -weight wbioh was upon it, the consequence being that it gave WC.y, and the three men were precipitated to tbe ground, a depth of about sixteen feet. Perriman was at oucg taken to the Hospital, where his injuries were promptly attended to. There was not much business for tbe presiding Justices, Messrs E. ff. Ward and J. Patorson, to dispose of at the City Police Court this morning. Julius M'Quaid was charged with having bean drunk while in charge of a horse and cab, and as it was the •third time that he had been guilty of the offunoe ho was fined L 3, or ten days's imprisonment. —Jane Tiune, for druukenness, was fined ss*, or twenty-£oav hours'. She was further charged with having dono damage to the extent of LlO to a cab belong iug to ouo Wm. Mason, but the charge had to be withdrawn as the Court ha 3 no jurisdiction over L 5. Through her drunkenness she had also been the means of breaking a window, valued at L 3, in the shop front cf Mr George West, music s&ller, for which that gentleman took out a buinmQßS.
