MR ADAMS AND THE LABOR MARKET.

To the Editor. Sir, —Last November, 1875, there appeared the following advertisement in the Glasgow papers :—" Wanted, a few respeetable Hatters for Dunedin; married men preferred ;to sail 15th December. Apply 54, Broomielaw." Upon applying, the agent said that he had got a letter from Mr Adams to send out some hatters to Dunedin. I asked how many, and was told eight; and I am happy to say that I was the only one that left Glasgow. Thinking I was going to better my position, I gave up a business where I was making L 5 per week. When I came to Dunedin the first hatter I applied, to told me he was full (one man and an apprentice). The next, by good luck, I got work; but I should not have got the same only the men formerly employed had started in business for themselves, hence the vacanoy. Now, at the time this advertisement apE eared there was .not work for two 'more atters in this City, yet the letter said there were eight wanted. I should like to hear Mr Adams's reason for trying to induce men to leave their happy homes with their families to come here, when there is not the slightest chance of them getting work at their own trade. By your inserting this you will oblige.—l am, &c, A. Masters. Dunedin, July 25.
