Pass ing through the furzes, Coltness ran up to Father Claret, the pair being followed by Wisdom -*nd the favorite into the old course, where Father Claret increased his lead, and on passing , the mile-post the pair were a couple of lengths iu advance of Petrarch, in the centre of the track, in company with Wisdom, Skylark, Kisber, Great Tom, Forerunner, and Hardrada; Julius Crosar bein" in attendance, All Heart evidently outpaced and beaten off. Hei ! e Coltness was beaten, and for a few/ strides Wisdom held the lead, but when fairly in the. straight Petrarch went to the fore, and came ’on with a decided lead, waited upon by Forerunner, Skylark, Julius Coesar, and Mr .Baltazzi’s colt to within a quarter of a mile from home. Here Maidmcnt brought his horse to the front, and having all his bores beaten two distances from homo, cantered in the winner by five lengths from Foreruhner, who defeated his stable companion, Julius Cfesar, by three lengths for the second money. A similar distance separated the third, from Petrarch, who pulled up fourth.; Skylark being fifth, Collness sixth, Wisdom seventh, then Great Tom, Wild Tommy, Bracconier, Hardrada, Advance, All. Heart, Bay 'Wyndham, and Father Claret. Time, 2min. 44sec.
In the straight Petrarch, appeared all over a ;winner, but he cannot stay. Tho fine speed .of .Skylark waa of no avail? Forerunner rah a good horse, and Kisber’s was a great victory, and it stamps him as one of the best-horses we have seen for years. Another paper states that although as. tho horses came swiftly speeding round Fatten-'' ham-odrner Petrarch was leading, and there was a cry of “the favorite wins," yet when the straight waa reached Maidment gave Kisber one sharp awakoner with tho near •par, and th,o HurigaHan-bdrn son of Buc-eaneer-camo away like an arrow from a bow, and so cut down his opponents that it waa possible forchis jockey, as he passed the stand at a hand gallop live lengths "clear, of everything, to turn rotmd in his saddle arid - takfi gling furiously but fufilely behind a horse oi which it may b^"^ltl*he bx§di.','Was well trained, and superbly ridden. Webb 1
was the first to return' to the weighing', enclosure, and on leaving the scale Maidment took his place, the shout “ All right ” k few.seconds later being moderately well received. The party behind , the winner have landed k tremendous coup by his victory, the second time he has done them a .good turn ; and whilst their winnings ars Variously estimated, L 50.000 iSput down as the sum they have realised in bets alone. ' : It' will be seen that the was christened before the race, and thus did -toot. ..ran as the. Mineral colt, by which kjjpMla--, tkm he is better known.
