MAYORAL ELECTIONS.
DUNEDTN. Considerable excitement was manifested et the Council Chambers last evening, as the scrutineers for the various warda handed in their returns. Bell Ward was the last ward to return its voting, and before its declaration was made it was found that Mr Beeves had a majority of 166 votes. As it was understood that Mr WoodWnd had obtained a sweeping majority in the ward speculation as to the result of the election was'rife, and it was confidently asserted by the knowing ones that there would not be an appreciable difference between Messrs Beeves end Woodland. The latter gentleman freely stated that he had no fear of the result, and when it was stated, shortly before 6 o'clock, that Mr Beeves had been returned by a majority of three votes the excitement became intense. A subsequent scrutiny, however, made the result a tie, necessitating a fresh election. Subjoined will be found the number of votes polled in each Ward :

Ihe announcement was received without any of the usual applause, there not being even a cheer. Mr Mason was thanking the electors, when he was stopped by some of the ratepayers < ndeavoring to shoulder him. Mr Dunno then came forward and thanked those who voted for him. He characterised the action of the Mayor, Town Clerk, and his opponent in striking so many names off the roll as political villany and thievery. He stated that no rates would require to be paid this year, and that on August 1 the Mayor and Council would be dead —tl.ey would then cease to exist. The electors would then be called upon to return another Mayor aud other coumiillois, and they should look out to elect men who would uot go in for political thieving' by disfranchising thu <s)uef portion ofthe town. — —(Lr.uii cheeis.) Although now deprived of their rights, tliey would yet have them. Mr Dunne was well received.
