Saturday, July 22. (Before A. Mercer, Escj., and J. Hialop, Esq.,

Before the business of the Court was proceeded with this morning, Mr Mercer asked Inspector Mallard if he could give him any explanation upon an occurrence which took place within his notice and that of the public yesterday morning. He alluded to a prisoner—who the night previously had been taken up for drunkenness, and, while in the Btate of intoxication, had assaulted a constable—being taken to Gaol bound in shackles.—lnspector Mallard knew of no other rearon than that they were afraid of his making another attempt to assault the constable m charge.—Mr Mercer thought that was highly improbable when the man was sober, and he thought the offence committed hardly merited such treatment. He did not like to interfere in the matter, but he thought it right, on behalf of the public, to ask for an explanation. Drunkenness.—Henry Cooper, for this offence, was dismissed; Ann Bacon and Mary Henry were each fined ss, or twentyfour hours' imprisonment; Helen Hesman, 40s, or seven days', she having previously been convicted.

Breach of the Peace.—William Williams pleaded guilty to conducting himself in a disorderly manner, and was lined 20s, or three days' imprisonment. Attempted Suicide.—Contradina Brenar was charged with having, on the 9th inst., at Ravensbourne, made an attempt to kill herself.—After hearing the evidence of Dr. Niven, who examined the wound on the throat, and that of her husbaud, the Bench reminded the accused for medical examination.
