MAYORAL ELECTIONS.
DUNEDIN.
The election for Mayor took place to-day, and occasioned considerable excitement, every effort being made by the committees of the rival candidates to secure every possible vote. From an early honr this morning cabs placarded with the names of the various candidates and soliciting the suffrages of the ratepayers paraded the town. The proceedings in the early part of the day were rather tame, but as the weather cleared up in the afternoon considerable stir was manifested—especially in the neighborhood of the town polling-booth and about the Empire Hotel. The usual amount of speenlation as to the result of the election was indulged in, Mr Beeves having slightly the call in the betting. Those who supported Mr Woodland were principally the working classes; while it was understood that Mr Beeves had secured the block vete of one section of the community, and Mr Walter that of another. Last year, when Mr Walter was returned by a majority of 372 over Mr Beeces, there were 3,586 names on the roll, and of this number 1,736 voted. This year the total number of electors on the roll was 8,824. Subjoined is the result of the polling:—

There was more stir in South Dunedin to-day 'ban einee the formation of this municipality, and every means were seen ed to bring the voters up to the polling-booth. Not only was the energy ©on’ fined to the district, but cabs were constantly throughout the day being seat into Hie City or any of the sQhprbs where it was believed a ratepayer was to be found. The election was between Mr N Maloney (the present Mayor), and Mr P. H. Brady, a prominent member of the Caversham Boad Board. The Town Clerk declared the polling to Maloney ... ... ... Iso Brady 128 ST. HILDA. The proceedings in this portion of the Plat were very tame, the announcement by Mr Paxton that he would not go to the poll leaving the election virtually a walk ever for the other candidate, Mr J. P.
