July 20.—Beautiful Star, s.s., 146 tons, Peterson, from Lyttelton, via intermediate ports. .Taiaroa, s.s., 228 tons, Stewart, from Timaru, Passengers : Mrs Day, Messrs Glover, Howlinson, Sword, Huggins, Gunn, Turner, and four in the steerage. City of New York, 8.M.5.5., 3,500 tons, J. M. Cavarly, from Kandavu. via the Northern Ports. Passengers; Messrs A. Blen, G. Blen, Campbell. Samson arrived from Oamarn yesterday evening, and passed the Port to Dunedin. '1 he 5.3. Express sailed last evening for her usual tnp to Bluff Harbor. The barge Hope sailed this morning with cargo for Waikquaiti. * The Union Company’s s.s. Beauti’ul Star, with cargo from Lyttelton and intermediate ports, nmyed early this morning, and steamed past the Port to Dunedin, There was considerable excitement on the Eattray sire t wharf this afternoon on the arrival of lug . aupo, which, vessel was brought up by Pilot Loudon at half-past two o’clock. The Taupo, whose draught was 10ft forward and 12ft 6in aft, was waited on by the Geelong and Samson, but thoir services were not required. A salute was nrea, and responded to by the Company’s vessel Ladybird, lying at tho wharf. The Taiaroa folhnved close alter the Taupo, and was quickly berthed astern of the Argosy. The Albion Company’s steamer Taiaroa returned from her usual trip to Timaru at eight this momnig. and steamed alongside the ship Wellington to discharge cargo. She left Timaru at 8 p.m. yesterday, and experienced light S.W. wind with cloudy weatherto arrival.

Slie left Onehnnga at 2p.m. outheltth, and called at Taranaki, Nelson, rieton, Wellington, and Lyttelton. Experienced light southerly winds and fine weather from Onenunga to arrival. Wa thank Mr Ponsouby (purser) for report and exchanges. The R.M. s.s. City of New York, with the Otago portion of the San Francisco mails, arrived off the Jlcatls nt w.lB this moining. The s.s. Jane, having been chartered, proceeded ontside shortly after daylight and transhipped the mails. XJufortunat.lv she reached the railway pier a few minutes too late to catch the 8.50 up train. The City of f! ew Knndavu at 5.15 p.m. on um -ith mst., and arrived at Auckland at 7.22 p.m. cn the 15th ; left at 3.30 am. on the 16th, and arrived at Napier at 4 p.m. on the 17th ; loft at 5 I> ra., and arrived at Wellington at 11.55 a.m. on the 18th ; lett at 3.30 p.m., and arrived off Lyttelton at 4 a.m. on the 19th; waited outside until daylight, e into the harbor, landed mails, ana left again at 9.30 a m , arriving off the Heads as above. The City of New York crossed the Port Chalmers Bar at 1 p.m., in change of Pilot Kelly, and anchored in the Port. nptain Caverley express _s himself perfectly satisfied with the manner m which the vessel, which was drawing 2lft Bin aft ana 20ft forward, was brought into port.
