Christchtjrch, July 18. The City Council have appointed a committeee to inquire into the effect the Governm<*it fmancials proposals will be likely to have on the City, more especially as bearing upon the Corporation taking over charitable institutions.
Wellington, July 19. It is understood that the representative of the Pacific Mail Company went to Sydney by the last mail steamer to secure the aban. donment of the New Zealand coastal service, and in the event of such a concession not being made there is a probability of the termination of the service, the risks of entering the New Zealand ports and the frequent grounding of the steamers being considered too great a risk to run. The severest shock of earthquake felt for many years occurred here at 4.20 this morning. It was preceded and accompanied by a loud rumbling. Lyttelton, July 17. Here and at Christchurch a shock of earthquake was felt severely at 4.10 this morning. It lasted several seconds. New Plymouth, July 17. An earthquake lasting several seconds and of a violent nature occurred here this morn ing at 4.12.

Marton, July 19. A 4.20 this morning the heaviest shock of earthquake that has been experienced for years was felt, accompanied with a loud rumbling.
Westport, July 19. A crushing of 150 tors of the Alpine Co.'s stone gave 130ozs. of gold. An earthquake shock was felt hero this morning at 4.17. It lasted ten sconds.
Patea, July 17. A severe shock of earthquake was felt here this morning at, about 4.20. It lasted one minute.
