Auckland, July 14, A landslip occurred on the railway near Mercer last night, extending 100 ft long and 15ft high. As the night train approached the slip, the engine driver observed it, he shut off steam and reversed the engine; but not in time to prevent the locomotive from rushing into the mass of earth. The engine ran off the line and fell over on its side, but both driver and stoker escaped unhurt by jumping off. There were only four passen£ers in the train, and none of them was urt. The carriages remained stationary on the line.

A . . . Hokitika, July 14. A serious mining accident occurred at Woodstock yesterday. Hill and Parke’s runnel caved in, burying three men, named wtuart Hill, James Hill, and Joseph Roberts. o.hey were expected to attend a lodge meetmg last mght, but not putting in an appearance, search was made, and the accident discovered. A large party commenced to dig them out. James Hill was dead, Roberts badly injured. Stuart Hill is still in the claim j his legs are Jammed with earth, but he is still alive. It will take some time to reach him. The ground is very treacherous. The tunnel fell in at 11 a.m. T , _ Christchurch, July 14. John Beamish has committed suicide owing to heavy losses by the Oxford bush fires some weeks ago. .
