PORT CHALMERS TOWN COUNCIL.
The usual fortnightly meeting of the above Council was held last evening; present— The Mayor, Councillors M'Kinlay, Asher, M'Gregor, Menelaus, Middleditch, Reid, and Miller.
The Town Clerk read the following correspondence :—Prom Mr C. Guisope, offering to lease a quarry on Town Belt at Lls per annum, or to pay a royalty per cube foot. On the motion of Cr. M'Greoor the offer of Lls per annum was accepted on condition that the Reserves Committee lay off the boundaries of same.—From the Corporation Solicitor, in reference to salary and debentures. Received and the amount of salary ordered to be paid.—From Mr Faulkner, offering to lease section 31, block 4, North Harbor and Blueskin district at the rate of 2s 6d per acre. Referred to Reserves Committee.—From Messrs M'Kenzie and Co., forwarding deed of confirmation of lease of large quarry under articles of agreement. After the deed had been read by the Town Clerk, there was considerable discussion, and the following amendment was carried: —That if the solicitor approve of the deed the clerk should affix the seal.—From Mr Hugh M'Dermid, offering to submit his claim for compensation, re waterworks, to arbitration. Received, and the clerk authorised to acknowledge the same.—From the secretary of the Fire Brigade, asking the Council to procure for their use two dozen buckets, two ladders, thirty fathoms of two and a half inch Manilla, and two axes; also requesting that the intended engine-house shed might be at once repaired; and wishing to be informed where the fire-bell is to be rung. Resolved that the sum of L 25 be voted to the Brigade for purchasing the articles required. It was resolved, on the motion of Cr. Reid, that tenders be called for the purchase of the whole of the timber on the Town Belt.
The Reserves Committee reported in reference to Mr J. Henderson's application to lease section 118 at L 4 per annum, recommending that the same be granted. After discussion, Cr. Miller's amendment that the report be not adopted was carried. Notices of Motions:—Cr. M*Kinlay, "That the Inspector of Nuisances give all residents on the Town Belt one month's notice to quit;" by Cr. Menelaus, " That tenders be colled for carting for six months, and that the contractor provide a dust cart for George street twice a week." Cr. M'Gregob moved " That a committee, consisting of the Mayor, Cr. Reid, and the Town Clerk, frame a letter to forward with plans, &c, in reference to the Town Belt, Cemetery, and Gasworks to the member for the Port at the Assembly." Cr. M'vJregor called the attention of the Council to the bad state of Macandrew Terrace, between the Graving Dock and Sutherlands Slip, which was caused by the railway works. Resolved that the Clerk write to Messrs Allen, King street, in reference to the same.
The Mayor's salary was ordered to be paid, and tae Town Clerk was appointed to act as Returning Officer. Polling clerks and places were also appointed, and the meeting adjourned.
