Monday, July 3. (Before A. Mercer, Esq., and C. S. Reeves, Esq., J.P.'s)
Drunkenness.—Joseph Carey and John Williams were each discharged with a caution. Frank Alsace was fined ss, with the usual alternative. William M'Donald was ordered to pay a penalty of 10b, in default, forty-eight hours' imprisonment. John M. Bossman, John Thomas, and Edward Murphy, were each fined in a like amount. Adam Fraser was fined in the sum of 2tt§*iwith the option of three days' imprisonment. David Jones was charged with being drunk in Rattray Btreet; also with being an habitual drunkard.—Mr Mercer : You are fined 40s or seven days', and let off on the second case, upon the understanding that you don't come back again. —lnspector Mallard asked that the second charge should merely be withdrawn without prejudice. The police could prove that he was an habitnal drunkard within the meaning of the Act, independent of previous convictions.—The charge was allowed to be withdrawn. Agnes Gunif, a disreputable character, was charged with drunkenness at Kensington, and also with using obscene language. ' She was fined 10s, in default forty-eight hours' imprisonment, on the first charge; 40s, with the alternative of seven days' imprisonment, on the second. Riotous Conduct.—John William Lawrence pleaded gnilty to creating a breach of the peace in Walker street on Saturday. —Constable Walker, who apprehended him, described prisoner as being desperate, and Btriking at witness with great force.— Accused was fined 10s, in default forty-eight hours' imprisonment.—John Flinn, for fighting, was fined in a like penalty. vagrancy. Matthew Flannagan, for having no lawful means of support, was sentenced to three months' imprisonment, with hard labor. Man and Wifb.—Edward Williams was charged by his wife, Catherine Williams, with assaulting her.—Prisoner appeared to have acted very harshly towards his wife, but he pleaded that he was goaded to desperation by her constant intoxication.—The case was dismissed.
