Tuesday, June 27. (Before Dr Niven,. J.P., and T. Birch, Esq., J.P.)
Obtaining Money‘XTnder False Pretences.—William Hall was charged, upon the information of William Miller, with obtaining the sum of L2 from him by false assertions. The informant stated that he had given accused a loan of the above amount on the 23rd .June, prisoner having told him chat he’ had been to the Bank, in company with Mr Conyers, with a draft which he had received from Southland, but could not get the money until some alteration had been made. On inquiry it was found that Mr Conyers was out of town. Witness did not wish to press the charge, but Inspector Mallard stated that accused was well known to the police as a regular swindler.—Accused pleaded hard for their Worships to deal leniently with him, as he had a wife and child to support.—Mr Conyers, who stated that he was at Oamairu when the offence was spoke as to the number of years he had known the accused, and that his parents were very respectable people.—Their Wprships said that could not have any effect upon their decision, and sentenced him to one month’s imprisonment, with hard labor..
