The proclamation of the Queen’s assumption of the title of Empress of India has been received with the same acquiescence all over the East that distinguished the reception of the news of Mr Disraeli’s proposal. The intelligent native press generally prefers the title of Empress to Queen, and Anglo-Indians as well as natives cannot understand the fuss made over the matter in England. For many years medals have been struck, memorials forwarded, and books written in India all with the title of Empress, everyone being in ignorance of the title not being assumed in 1868. Lord Lytton, the new Viceroy, has made a very favorable impresion so far. His opening speech gave general satisfaction, llitualism is growing apace in Ceylon, the new bishop and his imported colleagues being advanced High Churchmen. The agitation for disendowment is likely to bear fruit soon.
