Wellington, Jame 17. The Hon. Mr Fitzherbert has published a statement with regard to the financial position of the Province now that its entity is about to cease. The substance of the document is to the effect that the asset? of the Province are more tha«* double the amount of its liabilities, or, using a trade expression that it'can pay 40s in the pound. • This is exclusive of large blocks of land in the Province on which considerable sums have been* expended towards the extinguishment of the JSTutive title, and the negotiations of several of which are almost complete.
Hokitika, June 17. Two children, aged eleven and eight years, daughters of Patrick Griffin, who were sent to look after cattle between the Taipo and Wainui rivers, have been lost since noon of Wednesday. A search party has gone out, but there are little hopes of their being found alive.
Riverton, June 19. At a conference of the delegates from the Aparima Eoad Board and Kiverton Town Council to consider the boundary of the proposed county, it was unanimously resolved that the boundaries of the future county include all the country that lies to the west of Oreti, and from a line drawn north from the source of the Oreti to a of 45degs., and that the parallel to Caswell's Sound be the northern boundary, with the seaboard for the other boundaries. A copy of the same was forwarded to the member for the district.
Christchtjrch, June 19. Bates's chair manufactory was destroyed by fire early on Sunday morning. The damage is about L 2.500, and the insurance LI,OOO in the Liverpool, London, and Globe office. • The origin of the fire is unknown.
Gbahamstown, June 19. Mr J. E. M'Donald, Mayor of the Borough, has announced his candidature for the seat vacated by Sir G. Grey. ;Mr Samuel Stephenson, hotelkeeper, has also issued an address.

Balclutha, June 17, The remains of the late Mr Maitland were interred this afternoon in the Balclutha cemetery. The funeral cortege was very large. There were twenty vehicles, upwards of fifty horsemen, and' a number on foot. .* number of Dunedin people were present, amongst whom were his Honor the Deputy-Superintendent, and Messrs Nation, Dalgety, Judge Bathgate, and several others.' The rear was brought up by seven Chinamen, employe's of the deceased. Oamaru, June 19. A* information has been laid by Mr Nancarrow, Inspector of Machinery, against Messrs Morrison and > 0., contractor, for working the Rover engine on the Waiareka line at a pressure of over 651bs; also for tying down the safety-valve, to which the jury attributed the late fatal accident. The case cornea on for bearing on Thursday.
