Hokitika, June 17. Mr Manton, a mineralogist with twentyfive years' experience, assayed yesterday at the Bank a parcel of Mount Eangitoto ore as taken direct from the mine, which yielded 4300z\ 1 dwt. of silver to the ton of rough ore. The silver is richly impregnated with gold, discernible to the naked eye. Mr Kirkland's assay report regarding this mine is. therefore confirmed. Mr Manton is prepared to challenge any person doubting its accuracy.
{From our own Correspondents } ■ , Balclutha, June 16. Mr Milner, on behalf of Messrs Grigor, Maitland, and Co., sold Mr E. M'Donald’s new township of Granton, which brought good prices. A man named Keenan broke his leg this morning at Nelson’s Benhar Coal Mine, near Stirling. He was conveyed to. Balclutha and attended to by Dr Smith. The accident was caused by Keenan helping to hold up one side of a dray in order to put the wheel on which had come off by accident, when the horse moved ahead, and the side of the dray fell upon his leg, breaking it between the knee and ankle.
_. Napier, June 16. The meeting of members of Friendly Societies last night was largely attended, 170 being present, besides representatives from all inland societies. About one thousand in all were represented. The principal speakers were Messrs Carter (late M.P.C. for Wellington), Harding, and Garner. There is a strong feeling here against the Friendly Societies 7 Bill, and it is thought that a session when party strife will be dominant is not the time to legislate on such a great social question. The Hawkes Bay members leave per Zealandia. *
