VOLUNTEER INTELLIGENCE.

CHALLENGE MATCH. The challenge match between ten men of the East Taieri Rifles, ten men of the South' District Rangers, and ten men of the West Taieri Rifles came off at the W.T.R. Company's range on Saturday last. The weather was splendid, the 'day being one of those clear sunshiny ones that we have in the winter occasionally, warm in the sUn but ■freezing in the'shade. There was little or no irinu, which caused the smoke sometimes to hang low and obscure the target. The East 'Taieri, Rifles were Accompanied by Captain' Edwards and Lieutenant Christie, and they made'some very'good shooting, being'the victors by fifty points over the South District, Rifles and 150 ahead of the' West Taieri Rifles. This great desparityin the scores between the East Taieri Company and the West Taieri Company was not to be attributed to the shooting so much as to the execrable ammunition that had been sent to the West 'Taieri Company. A thousand rounds arrived on *■ Friday, and it was some of. that first niade for the the breechloading rifles—it was for .677 bore, and the date was 1867. The bullets have a hole in the point filled with a wooden plug. It would appeals that the shock of the discharge causes this plug to fly out and the wind df the bullet in ite passage through the air getting inta tjbiis hole causes the bullet to diverge from its 1 course, and consequently there can be no certainty when firing to know what‘direction the bullet will take.
