EDUCATION BOARD.

The Board met this morning; present— His Honor the Superintendent, Davie, Lumsden, M‘Keilar, (secretary). The use of the now closed school at Gummie’s Bush was granted to Captain Stewart’s private tutor, some residents in the district complaining that the fchool at Wild Bush is too far away. Mr George Green asked that the Northeast Harbor School be removed to Broad Bay.—His Honor said the prisoners would probably finish the.roadtb Portobello in four months, and shortly the distriob and the new township of Dunoon would require a school for itself, instead of moving that from North-East Harbor.—The Application -was deferred.

A number of applications for assistance of various kinds were refused, the Board agreeing with his Honor that in the present state of the Provincial finances fresh under-; takings could not be gone into by the Board:' It was a sad thing to have to defer them, but there was no choice in the matter. The following were the applications ;—From Kaitangata and Papakaio side schools to be made into main schools; from Havelock and Mahenofora pupil teacher tach ; from.lnvercargill District School for an assistant, master; from the Dunedin School Committeefor the completion of the playground at Albany Street School; from Bannockburn' for enlargement of school; and several for two-thirds of costs of improvements. The transfer of certain of the Board’s leases were sanctioned.

The request of the Queenstown School Committee; that the Board should contribute towards the travelling expenses of the school’s now teachers from Victoria, was refused, such a course being considered a bad precedent. The Secretary submitted regulations he had drawn up to define-the relative positions at the Girls’High School of Mrs Burn and Mrs Martin, the latter lady having accepted the charge of the boarding department. Reference was made in the draft regulations to the question of visiting teachers s . —Hia Honor said he had received a communication from Mr George Bell bearing on the latter subject, and as, it was a lengthy one it had better be referred With the Secretary’s draft regulations to the Government, by whom'both could be taken into consideration together. ‘ *• The following recent appointments were sanctioned Mr Alexander M'Callum’ to Manuka Creek, vice Mr Hume ; Mr Kbenezer Piper to Toueraki new school; Miss iinma Bowden, pupil teacher at Tapanui.
