Inspector Mallard stated that the lad’s father had no control over his son, who had been in the Industrial School, and that the gaol was the only fit place for him. A rule nisi for a writ of habeas corpus was obtained at the Supreme Court, this morning, on the application of Mr G. B. Barton, calling upon the governor of the gaol to show cause why Emily Zirk, now detained there on a charge of having stolen an antimacassar from the Globe Hotel, should not be discharged from custody. The grounds on which the rule was obtained are, we believe, to the effect that the magistrates had acted beyond their jurisdiction*. 1 ' The rule is returnable to-mor* row-at two, 0’c10ck..,...

Arawata, en route to England per Royal Mail Steamship Australia, on business connected with Telegraph Cable extension. The ‘News •’ states that on Monday morning Mr.Cracknell had occasion to send a telegram to Sydney! The; message was put in at the Invercargiil.office at 10.45, and he received ah answer «s»f ; 100 words at 12.45, just two hours later. ; Con-; sidering that the message has three re-trans-: missions in New Zealand this speaks wellfor the smartness of the Telegraph department and the efficiency of the cable. ’ ' t - ; < A public meeting was held at on the 19th inst. to discuss the question of; the boundaries of ..the proposed, qounties,: when the fallowing resolutions were carried :l —“ That in the event of the Abolition Bill; being, carried, the meeting take stfps to have the shire boundaries-ior theWaikaia' district defined.” ‘‘.That, .-the following! boundaries be recommended to the Govern-i ment: Leaving theMolyneux at the mouth, of the Bengerbum; thence by the Bengerburnto its source; thence to the junctionbf; the Parasol Creek. with the Pomahbka;; thence by the goldfields line to the Mat Sura; thence by the Mataura to Waikaka mouth; thence by the Waikaka to its junction with the Pakurau ; thence by the Pakurau until it turns south; thehce by the southern boundary of run 167 a to the Waipahee; thence down the Waipahee to its junction with the Pomahaka; thence by the Pomahaka to the Molyneux, and by the Molyheux to the starting point.” ' The Glenore bridge on the Tuapeka; branch line of railway was tested yesterday >by Mr W. W. Dartnell, District Engineer.; - The bridge is built in three spans of sixty feet each, and an engine with three loaded trucks attached was placed in the centre of each span. The average deflection was only three-sixteenths of an inch. The engine and trucks were then run over the bridge t'trice, at an average rate of twenty miles an hour, and when the permanent set was taken, it proved to be an average of one-eighth of an inch, a result which is considered exceedingly satisfactory. The engine ran round the curves with the greatest ease, although the line has not yet been ballasted, and in the straight the line was so steady, that a bell would not haye rung had one been attached to the engine. The * Brace Herald*’ adds'that this shows the care taken in setting but the line and laying the permanent way. Mr J. R. DayieS, junr., mana|ty fop Smyth, Wayne, and Co., who have the contract, for ballasting the fine between Clarks ville and Glenore, accompanied Mr Dartnell.

'I he decision of the Carnival Committee rendered necessary a chan e in the arrangements of the, Committee of the Servants’Hoffie for the entertaimiient they proposed to give in aid of .that institution. They had gone too far to draw bade, and yet had a difficulty in gong forward; till Mr Sibbald generously came to the relief of the committee by placing the hew .theatre at their disposal. ‘ It will be seen from an advertisenient in another column that the entertainm: nt is to come off in the theatre on Monday next, and seeing that, it is in aid of a most laudable object, and from the amount of support promised, the programme is likely t > be a very attractive one; We trust there will be a very large muster of the citizens on the occasion.
