A PROPER SNUBBING.
Tho petition addressed by certain rodents of Brisbane to Her Majesty tho Queen, on the subject of Sir Maurice O’Connell’s presence and attitude at a luncheon given by the Roman Catholic Bishop, T)r. Quinn, has not (says tho ‘Brisbane Courier’) attained the desired object. Lord Carnarvon, in a recent despatch to tho Governor of Queensland, desires that tho petitioners should be informed that the petition had been duly laid before tho Queen, and that, whilst appreciating the loyal feeling which would resent the postponement of tho Queen’s health to any other toast on ruch an occasion, bis lordship was of opinion that there was clearly no reason to suppose that Sir Maurice O’Connell was cognisant of or approved the order in which it had been settled that the toasts should be given at a gathering which appears to have been held under the auspices of the Roman Catholic clergy. Lord Carnarvon was not aware of anything in Sir Maurice o‘Conneira distinguished career which could justify a doubt as to his being a true and loyal subject ©f the Queen, and it was impossible to believe him capable of intentionally connecting himself with any proceedings by taking part in which he could be inferred to consider any person entitled to higher honors than his Sovereign. Tbe Secretary of State further stated that, in connection with this question, it should be explained that the dormant commission to administer tho Government of Queensland was conferred upon the clfice of President of tho Legislative Council, and not upon any particular individual. To unue, therefore, the exception sug-
gested in the case of Sir Maurice O’Connell would be to subject him to a double, and, as lord Carnarvon states he has every reason to believe, a wholly undeserved indignity.
