RESIDENT MAGISTRATE’S COURT, PORT CHALMERS.
Tuesday, May 23. (Before T. A. Mansford, Esq,, R.M.)
A Paltry Charge. —James Lewis was charged with assaulting Thomas Walker, on the 13th inst.—Mr Joyce appeared for the plaintiff; Mr E. Cook for the defendant, who pleaded not guilty. From the evidence given by the plaintiff it seemed that on the morning in question he found some horses belonging to the defendant in his paddock, and was turning them out when defendant came up and challenged him to fight. Witness declined doing so, and was knocked down and severely bruised. Several witnesses were examined, and the Bench ordered defendant to pay a flue of 20s and costs, in default to undergo three days’ hard labor.
Assault.— Thomas Pointon was charged with assaulting Ah Moy. Defendant pleaded not guilty and after hearing the evidence the Magistrate dismissed the charge.
