THE TOWN HALL.

To the Editor,

Sir, —Your correspondent “Ratepayer” is a man of genius. Having to make out a case he first manufactures his facts and then comments upon them. He assumes that the Town Hall will cost L 25.000, which I will, for the present, admit; but I do not admit that “as the Corporation is without funds for the purpose, of course another loan of Lloo, ooo must be launched,” &c. Far from being “without funds for the purpose” the Corporation has the best part of L10l),P00 to its credit at the Bank. So much for “ Ratepayer’s ” facts. Now for bis inferences and comments. They are really worth reproducing if you will allow me the space r—- “ The actual cost to the citizens will thus be about L 75,000, viz. ; Bill due in thirty-three years ... L 25,000 Interest on same at 6 per cent, or L 1,500 per annum for thirty* three years ... ... 49,600 Exchanges and petty expenses ... " 600 Total L 75.000 As the other inferences and comments are on a par with this, pray let this one suffice. Perhaps as “ Ratepayer ” is so willing to give advice, he would take a bit of round advice in return. In another column of your issue I find the following passage:— “ A new religious vagary in California is a sect of ‘Child Christians,’ who interpret literally the passage, ‘ Except ye be converted and become as little children ye shall not enter the Kingdom of Heaven.’ They endeavor to feel and act like children, playing childish games, and adopting fen infantile manner of speech.” Now, the best advice I can give “Ratepayer” is to go to California.—l am, &c., City Councillor. Dunedin, May 19.
