Saturday, May 20. [Before E. ff. Ward, Esq., and T. Birch,

Esq., J.P.’s.)

Drunkenness. Joseph Johnstone was fined ss, in default twenty-four hours’ impnsonment: Bridget Kane and Anne Johnston each 40s, or three days’ Unruly B /ys.— John F. Hoare and John M'Cartby, two youths, were charged with stealing one pound of ham, of the value of Is 6d, the property of Edward de Montalk, teacher. M‘Carthy pleaded that Hoare carried the ham away; and Hoare, that the other boy snatched it.—The ham was stolen out of Master Montalk’s hands while he was taking it home. —Mr Ward thought a good whipping the only cure for 'the poys.—lnspector Mallard said that birching boys in his days was the only way of reforming them.—Mr Birch did not approve of this mode of treatment. —As M‘Carthy’s parents did not appear the case was adjourned till Monday, the Bench disapproving of parents shirking their responsibilities.

Larceny from an Hotel.— John Mason was charged by John Hornsby, hotelkeeper, with stealing on May 16, three L 5 notes, seven LI notes, and two sovereigns, his property.—Prosecutor, who is proprietor of the Anchor Hotel, said he recently lost the money in question. With the exception of 7s 6d it had all been recovered.—Detective Henderson said that prisoner, in Mrs Hornsby’s presence, handed him the money produced. He said that hearing of the robbery he fancied the money was in a mattrass, and on ripping open the mattrass there discovered it. —lnspector Milliard stated there was also a charge against prisoner of stealing a watch, but he not had time to communicate with the prosecutrix.—Prisoner said he was cook at the hotel, and on hearing of the robbery overhauled the mattrasses, and there found the money and watch concealed. He was remanded till Monday,
