THE PROPOSED TOWN HALL.
To the Editor . Sir, —I believe the City Council have acted wisely in deciding that the Town Hall shall be in the Octagon. Were the question tested I believe a large .majority of the citizens would be found upholding the resolution of the Council. Your correspondent “Lux” grudgingly admits that the site selected is the centre of the City. I submit that it is the site which will be most conducive to the convenience of a large majority of the ratepayers—that it is (on its own merits)!ar and away the best siW in Dunedin, that it is the site best fitted to show a good building to advantage, the site giving the best opportunities of providing proper means of ingress and egress, the site promising the greatest advantages in the way of providing ample accommodation for the various municipal purposes contemplated iu connection with tne erection of a Town Hall; and with all these and other advantages it is the cheapest site. 1 don’t think there are a hundred unbiassed men in Dunedin who
would agree to the purchase of the University Building. What] spend tons of thousands in the purchase of a site when we hare a better “ free, gratis, and for nothing and that is pretty much what the purchase of the University Building me** l *, as all the evidence goes to prove that the building is utterly unsuitable, and would cost about as nraoh to alter as would build a suitable hall; and then there would be no much-needed yard accommodation, &c. I will only say further that, if the decision of the Council is to be reviewed, it can only be done satisfactorily by giving every ratepayer an opportunity of expressing an opinion by means of a plebiscite. If the matter is to go further, I undertake to say that it will not stop until that is done.— I am, Ac., A Centralist. Dunedin, May 17.
