THE TOWN HALL.
To the Editor.
Sir, —At a special meeting yesterday the City Council determined that a Town Hall should be erected, the site selected by the Council being the Octagon Market Reserve, Now, I demur to that being a suitable site. It may be the centre of the town, but it is not the centre of commerce, and that question should be well considered by the ratepayers before they allow such a transaction to be completed. The University building is still to be obtained, and if it could be secured for a sum not exceeding L 30.000, it would then be a bargain to the City, considering its commanding position for such a purpose. I may remark that, from what I have observed in the reports of the special meeting yesterday, the proposed Hall m the Octagon will cost quite L 30,000, including value of land, &c., before it is thoroughly completed. I hope the citizens will call on the Mayor to convene a public meeting to consider this question, when I feel assured public opinion 'will resolve that, if possible, the University building should be purchased.—l am, &c., Dunedin, May 16,
