VOLUNTEER INTELLIGENCE.

Mr S. James, secretary to the Otago Rifle Association, has handed ns the following letter:—

Wellington, May 4,1876. I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of yonr letter of 7th ult, bringing under the notice of the Government a practice generally adopted in England at Snider rifle competitions of reversing the sliding bar of the back sight and aiming over the straight edge of the bar, &c., and by the direction of the Hon. Major Atkinson, in the absence of the Hon. Sir D. M'Lean, to inform you that it is not considered advisable to permit the present sighting cf the rifles to be altered,—l am. See., W. Moclb, Lieutenant-Colonel, Acting Under-Secretary for Defence.
