(Before T. Birch, and A. Mercer, Esq;, Drunkenness.-— Duncan Fraser, George Stougnell, and Joseph Jackson were each fined ss, in default 24 hours’ imprisonment; James Hunter, Joseph Insley, and Joseph Eindall, 10s, or 24 hours ; Margaret Scott 10s, or three days; William Muir 20s, or seven days. Obscene Language. —James Hayes was fined 20s, with the alternative of 48 hours’ imprisonment. Theft. —William Myall, a young mn.n > pleaded guilty to stealing from Blueskin one pair of garters, the property of Alexander Halsteson, and one pair of tweed trowsers, f the property of James Connolly.—Prisoner, I who nad been previously convicted of theft, was sentenced to three months’ imprison* ment with hard labor.
Charge of Vagrancy.— Margaret Clark, a young girl, was charged with having no visible means of support. Prisoner, with
another girl, escaped from the Female Refuge last week, and was brought before the Court on a charge of vagrancy. ’ They were dismissed on their promise to return to the Refuge. The other woman had obtained a situation. Prisoner gave herself up to the police on Saturday night, saying she had no home.—Mr Mercer said he understood that prisoner went back to the Refuge and was refused admission. The matter ought to be investigated, for if the girl wished, to be reclaimed this would be the only way to reaclim her.—lnspector Mallard mentioned that it was solely on the girl’s behalf that the police interfered. On Saturday night she gave herself over to,the police, saying she had been refused admittance to the Refuge, that she had had nothing to eat all day, and that if she was out all night she might get into the hands of some men.—Accused said that she wag a Venetian blind painter, but could not get any work. —The Bench adjourned the consideration of the case for a week, Mr Mercer promising to do what he could for the girl.
