ALLEGED FORGERY.
At the Christchurch Police Court on Wednesday, Allan Wright was brought up on remand, charged with having a post-office receipt. From the evidence it appeared that prisoner got possession of a Post Office Savings Bank book, belonging to a printer named Harry Windsor, and took it to the Post Office, saying that he desired to draw L2O out. A receipt was filled in by the clerk, William Russell Morris, and given to prisoner to sign. When the receipt was handed back to Morris, he noticed that tbe signature was unlike that of tbe person who bad depo ited the money, upon which he questioned prisoner, who, after some hesitation, said the book was his brother’s, also that his brother was ill, and had sent him to get the money. The money was not paid, and subsequently the police were communicated with. On being arrested by Detective Neil, prisoner said he did not think Harry Windsor would have put the police on to him; also, that Windsor gave him the book to get the money, and told him to say be was his (Windsor’s) brother, or it would not be paid to him. Prosecutor in evidence denied this, and said prisoner had no right to take the hook or apply for the money. Prisoner requested the Bench to grant a further remand, in order that he might take legal advice as to whether he should call witnesses for the defence. His Worship granted the request, and prisoner was remanded until Thursday.
