AN EXPLANATION.

To the Editor.

Sir, —Your issue of this evening, and also that of the * Guardian ’ this morning, contained a statement that Stevens and Chapman, of Port Chalmers, were in a boat which left Portobello on Wednesday evening last. This was not the case. We would have considered it unsafe to have left in so small a boat during such weather., and we are of opinion that those who reported this should have been more careful to have ascertained the names of the persons who had ventured in the missing boat. By doing this much unnecessary and painful apprehension for our safety would have been spared.—We are, &c.,

Stevens and Chapman. Port Chalmers, April 28.
