Christchurch, April 27. The Provincial statement of receipts and expenditure for the past quarter shows a very satisfactory state of affairs. The receipts from railways during the quarter were L 56.752 ; while the expenditure for ordinary expenses and renewal fund was L 23,434, The receipts from waste lands for the same period were L 55,724.
Auckland, April 27. The ‘Waikato Times' denounces the ‘ Wananga,’ the Maorqnewspaper published at Napier, as treasonable, by fomenting a rebellion amongst the Natives, and urges its immediate suspension by Government,
Greymouth, April 28, The directors of the Grey Coal Company last night resolved to bring an action for libel against the ‘ Mercantile Gazette,” Dunedin, for defamatory statements about the company, unless ample apology be given.
Wellington, April 28. The City Council has increased the salaries of all its officers proportionally according to salary—that of the Town Clerk being increased from L3OO to L4OO,
Hokitika, April 28. Professor Bickerton, of Christchurch, at the request of the Superintendent, has analysed a sample of the Mount Rangitoto silver ore, and gives the following result:— Lead, 51 per cent ; silver, 70 to 80 ozs, per ton, with an appreciible amount of gold.
(From our own Correspondents) Lawrence, April 28. A fire broke out at the Victoria Hotel last night at eight o’clock. The band was passing down the street when a child residing in the hotel rushed to the window ■with a candle, setting fire to the blind. An alarm was at once given and the flames extinguished before much damage was done. The Brigade mustered quickly, but their services were not required. The action of the Waste Land Board has given great satisfaction here.
