Wellington, April 12. At a meeting of the Fidelity Guarantee Company the following gentlemen were elected directors ;—Messrs Fitzherbert, Hunter, Dransfield, Krull, E. W, Mills, L. Levy, and Mountain. Instructions were given to proceed with the deed of settlement forthwith, in order that the Company may commence business as soon as possible. The plasterers employed upon the new Government offices have demanded Is per day increased wages, being 12s instead of 11s, and are determined to strike if they do not get it.
Wellington, April 13. It has come to light that several firemen at the late fire at the Empire Hotel pilfered wearing apparel and jewellery. The matter has been placed in the hands of the police, who have already discovered a good deal of the missing property.
Auckland, April 13. A deputation waited upon the Minister of Justice and represented to him the inconvenience of the present position of the Resident Magistrate’s and District Courts. Mr Bowen said, in reply, that that he had no doubt the brick chapel in High street might be obtained for the purpose, and thought Government would secure it. The mission-house at Hokianga was burnt down last night The Rev. Mr and Mrs Rouse had great difficulty in escaping. The house and furniture were only insured for LIOO, (From our own Correspondents.) Napier, April 12. Mr Chambers has found shale on his farm about twelve miles from Napier. He has caused a tunnel to be driven into the side of the river bank, and brought to light three strata nearly 13ft in thickness. Each bums capitally. The Lydia-Howard troupe continues to draw crowded houses nightly. Balclutha, April 13. Shields, of the schooner Jane Hannah, has been arrested at Gatlin’s River, charged with committing an unnatural offence on a boy. The protest against King Philip for the Clutha Handicap was sustained, after three hours’ consideration. There were some disgraceful scenes in consequence, and great indignation is expressed by nearly everybody.
