CITY COUNCIL.
The following business was transacted after we went to press yesterday : On a letter being read from the St. Kilda Municipality re the formation of a carriage drive across the sandhills to the Ocean Beach, the Mayor explaining that the road would be right abreast of the main road leading to the sandhills, Cr. Isaac moved a resolution, which was referred to the Finance Committee to report upon, affirming the desirability of the Corporation giving monetary assistance, with the view of the work being carried out. Mr M‘Kbnzie wrote offering to surrender the unexpired term of his lease of the Manure Depdt on payment of L 360. The Council declined to adopt that part of the Fire Brigade Committee’s report, which recommended the immediate construction of a new fire brigade station, and referred the matter to the Works Committee, which was instructed to consider it along with the Zuestion of office accommodation for the louncil. The reports of the Gas and Water Supply Committees were adopted. The former reported, inter alia, recommending that the wages of the gaugers at the works should be increased to LI 6, and of stokers to Ll4 amonth; and that Mr Weir had been appointed assistant inspector. The Water Supply Committee recommended That one week's notice of intention to discontinue the water supply for domestic purposes be piven to all consumers at Kensington and i! s neighborhood; the committee being of opinion that if the suburban residents desire to participate in the advantages of being supplied b> the City Water Works, they should take the steps preseated by the Water Works Act of 1875.—The Surveyor had been instructed to lay down a 9iu. water main in JBattray street, which wi 1 provide a sufficient supply of water for the residents higher up, as well as the engines, &c„ on the low level.—A number of ratepayers residing in the upper portion of the City having refused to pay the two thirds rate charged them, in consideration of a full supply of water not being attainable all day, tho committee had resolved that in all such cases the ordinary course should be pui sued—namely, the supply cut off and the arrears sued for. OnCr. Isaac moving—“ That, with the view of widening Princes street from Jetty street to Police street, the sum of L 3,000 bo offered the Corporation tenants in compensation for the immediate possession of the land required,” which was seconded proforma by Cr. Learv, Cr. Quick mentioned that the Finance Committee were of opinion that only L 1,500 should be offered, and he urged that Councillors should not be called upon to vote before they were in possession of the fullest information on the subject. The motion was also opposed, and strongly, by Cr. Gibson. An amendment moved by Cr." Moluson that the amount should be reduced to L 2,000 was accepted by Cr. Isaac and was adopted (Cr. Gibson dissenting) with an addition suggested by Cr. Quick, that the offer was a final one, and that in the event of its not being accepted no further action should be taken in the matter until the tenants’ term expires.
