NEW GUINEA.
To the Editor, Sir, —As your remarks in to-night's impression on “New Guinea” are slightly unfair to Signor L. M, D’Albertis, the enthusiastic Italian naturalist, will you kindly allow me to give more accurate facts. The expedition proposed is purely for geographical purposes, so far as Sydney is specially interested; and Signor D’Albertis, instead of asking for the expenses to be provided by the public, offers to contribute one-half of what he estimates the expedition would coat, by heading the public subscription with a donation of I*2oo. fie reserves to himself the. right to all zoological, botanical, and other natural history specimens. The expenses of preserving these he will himself defray. He offers, however, free, his experienced services in dealing with the Natives, and as a keen and trained observer, in recording publicly
whatever points of interest may present themselves concerning the Natives, the features of the country, and the character of the climate. If the public do not choose to take the matter up he proposes to return to New Guinea, and to continue his special studies there at his own expense, as he is not wanting in money. Trusting that I have made clear the thoroughly nnßalfoft nature of Signor d’Albertis’s offer, and hoping the Sydney public will not have allowed so golden an opportunity to slip.—l am, &c., _ Jacko.
