THE MILTON POTTERY.

Te the Editor. Sir,—On reading your leading article of the Ist inst. I was very much pleased to see the way you pointed out to the Government and to the public the good that might be’ done by retaining the potters in the Colony I have often thought if the Milton Pottery Company had been floated by proper persons the works would now have been in a flourishing condition, and would have been the means of employing a great deal of labor and consequently of keeping a large amount of money in the country. The Government have in many cases subsidised new industries of less importance to the country, and I think they should assist these men who have offered their services on such liberal terms. Again, I wonder why some of our spirited merchants do not come forward and offer to assist. I, for one, will subscribe to the extent of LSO, and I have an authority from a friend out of the Colony to subscribe a like amount. I am certain this matter only wants to be put into the hands of a good agent in Dunedin and there would be sufficient shares taken up to start the men at work within a very short time, especially if the Government would lend a helping hand. It would be far better to give the men some assistance to commence a business which they thoroughly understand than to give them a few acres of land to starve upon. As one who takes a great interest in the future welfare of the country, I subscribe myself, X Dunedin, April 10.
