The amount of revenue received at the Customhouse on goods cleared for consumption this day was LXO6l9s Id.
In the general market a very fair business was transacted during the past week. There is a lively demand from the up-country districts, storekeepers being desirous of filling up their stocks in anticipation of the coming winter. The chief difficulty is the scarcity of teams. Messrs M'Landress, Hepburn, and Co. offered the damaged portion of sugars by the Indian Chief yesterday, which realised very good prices. A small lot of Chinese goods found ready buyers at satisfactory rates at auction to-day. No change can be quoted in beers. The first shipment of Guinness's new brew is to hand, and proves to be in splendid condition. It commands 12s; pig brand, 12s 3d; Tennants ale, 11s 6d to Us 9d; Younger’s, 11s. No change can bo reported in spirits. In dried fruits, sultanas are coming to hand more freely and realise B}d to Bsd; Elemes, 6s; currants, 4Jd. Candles are firm at former quotations, and kerosene partakes of the improved tone, Devoe’s realising Is 6sd in bond. Fine salt is scarce and cannot be had under 85a to 90s. Cheese and butter continue to rule very high, 9*d being given freely for cheese, and Is 2d for butter. Hams and bacon ore unchanged. Mr A. Mercer reports tor the week ending April 8, r- tail prices only .—Fresh butter, in prints, Is 8d to Is 9d per lb; fresh butter, in lumps, Is 6d • powdered and salt butter, Is 6d. The supply of fresh butter has fallen off very much, and tbo market is no more than supplied. Salt butter, in kegs. Is 3d • cheese, best quality, Is to Is 2d per lb; side ana rolled bacon,ls to Is 2d; Colonial hams,ls 3dEnglish’ hams, Is 6d to Is Bd. Egcs still continue scarce, and the demand is good at Xi 9d per dozen.
