Wellington, April 6. . Smat, the perpetrator of the Hutt atrocities, was sentenced this morning to twenty years imprisonment on each of the two charges. The sentences are to run concur* rently. Grey and Sir J. Vogel. Sir G. Grey is moving to get the whole of the late correspondence in reference to public money being expended privately, referred to the Secretary of State. Samples of coal from Wangarei and Mercer have received very favorable opinions. The seams in both places have now been well worked into, and the quality has considerably unproved. The Harbor Board has determined not to lengthen the new railway pier, bat will obtain the requisite depth of water by dredging. Himiona Te Rua pleaded not guilty to the charge of wilful murder. The evidence was conclusive, and the jury returned a verdict of guilty, with a recommendation to mercy. The Judge passed sentence of death, but it is understood -there is little probability of that sentence being carried into effect. Himiona advanced, in justification, that he was the victim of witchcraft.

Invercargill, April 5. An examination of the hatching boxes yesterday by the Curator showed that twothirds of the ova packed by Mr Youl are Unimpregnated, ; and consequently worthless. All those packed by Mr Buckland are doing well. The Curator is of opinion that the six boxes' of Buckland’s ova will give a greater yield than the 100, boxes packed by Youl. Buckland’s boxes contained 1,200, Yonl’s 600 living ova.
