Perhaps nothing could be of more importance to the future interests of Tapauui than the construction of the proposed branch line of railway connecting the district with the main line. Tapanui township is well situated as a commercial centre, having a lino scope of agricultural land round'it—viz,, the Heriot deferred payments on the north-east; the Upper Pomahaka lands to the north, and the Waikaka deferred payment settlers •ii i ,Y, est ’ together with those who i j /i^ u £Sf ss se , 6on that fine block of land (17,000 acres) now being surveyed from one of the most choice portions of Mr Logan s run, near the Waikaka diggings. The Government have had the land surveyed, and the levels are now being taken. The line will follow the course of the Walpahi river, starting from the Clinton-Gore line near the Waipahi Hotel, and following the Waipohi down to its confluence with the Pomahaka ; it then skirts the western bank-of thePomahakafor some distance, after whichit crosses the [river below Mainholm, and tracing its course along the low banks of the river, finds its way to Tapanui township the whole distance being twelve miles and ar^^ e 1 P r °hable cost of construction, together with the rolling stock required, will not exceed L 4,000.
