The races may be said to have completely paralysed business, and consequently, so far as transactions are concerned, there may he considered there is nothing to report. By the Otago the first supply of new rice is to hand, and commands L 24. Among the arrivals during the week is the Indian Chief, from Mauritius, with a cargo of sugar consigned to Messrs J. Rattray and Co. Mr A. Mercer reports (retail prices only) for the week ending to-day.—Fresh butter in i and 11b prints Is 6d to Is 8d per lb; fresh butter in lumps, Is 4d to Is 5d powdered; and salt butter, Is 4d. Fresh butter is in good demand, and the quantity coming iu frrm the country has fallen off, and the market is no more than supplied, and prices lately have been advancing. Cheese of the best quality, Is to Is 2d; side and rolled bacon, Is to Is 2d; Colonial hums, Is 3d; English hams, Is 6d to Is Bd. Eggs have been very scarce lately and the demand (good at 2s Cd per dozen. **

Mr Skene reports:—The week has almost entirely been devoted to amusement and horse-racing. Next week work of all sorts will return to the usual routine, when masters and servants who have been holding back will buckle on their harness for the winter campaign. Wages in the meantime are steady at the old rates.
