Tlie new s.s. Matua tame down from Dunedin this mominy, and steamed to the dolphin in Caicos Bay, for the purpose of adjusting her compass. The barque Indian Chief which arrived at the Heads yesterday afternoon, was towed up hpt night by the tug Geelong w»th a full cargo consist* iug of 11,220 pockets, and 150 bags of sugar from the Mauritius, which port she left on January 31 with very threatening weather, which continued until the 7th February. On that day she experienced a strong S.W. gale, which compelled her to heave to for three days under lower maintopsail. After the gale moderated light winds and calms were experienced until the 10th, when she got the westerlies, which continued steady until passing between St. Paul's and Amsterdam Islands, when the wind hauled between B.W. and N.W. until withiu thirty miles of the Snares on the 19th inst, when she encountered a fearful gale from the S.W., and at noon hove to on the starboard tack. At 5 p.m. same day a tremendous sea struck her, throwing her on to her beam ends, Ailing the deck, washing the long-boat spare spars into the lee scuppers, and carrying away a portion of her bulwarks on each side. The gale moderated on the 20th, and ran down the coast as far as the Nuggets with a light breeze, when it again freshened, during which she was hove-to twice and driven past the port as for as Timaru; thence moderate variable to arrival as above.
