WRECK OP TEE FLORENCE:!

OKS Ll*s LOST. The schooner Florence, JDunedin to Wellington, in ballast, was lost in a W.N.W. squall off Banks Peninsula at two o’clock on Saturday morning. The vessel went down five minutes niter being struck. One man, Charles Jackson, was lost. The, captain and crew took to the boat, and were driven forty miles from the land. They had no oars, £&d rowed into port with pieces of the boat’s lining lashed together. They reached Lyttelton at one yesterday morning. The schoorer, which was insured in the Victoria office for LBOO, was pmyhasod here six weeks ago by Messrs M’lutyre and Co., of Wellington. She was worth about L 1,500.

THE MATAU’S TRIP,

After our second despatch per carrier pigeon was forwarded from the MaxiU on Saturday, the vessel pioceeded beyond the Heads and rounded the Wellington, lying five milek outside. Captain Thomson having ascertained that there was only one case of typhus fever on board, ordered Captain Cowan, of the Wellington, to signal for a tug, which announcement evoked hearty cheers for those on hoard the Matau from the Wellington's immigrants. The steamer then returned to port, behaving admirably under Captain Urqnhart’s command, for although there was a considerable swell on sea-sickness' Was confined to a few children. Just before reaching Port Chalmers a little speechifying was indulged in. Mr Reeves proposed the health of her builders, Messrs Kincaid and M'Qaeen, which was responded to by Mr M'Queen; who expressed the hope that local builders would before long be able to supply the whole ship-building trade of the Colony. The Mayor of Port Chalmers (Mr M'Kiuuon) in proposing the health of the intended owners of the vessel, said that great credit was due to Messrs-Kincaid andM’Queen for turning out a vessel like the Matau. He only hoped that she ' would be the fore-runner or many similar vessels. Mr Nimmo, whose name had been coupled with the toast, in replying said he was sure the owners of the steamer had to thank Messrs Kincaid and M'Queen for the highly satisfactory way in which they had turned out the vessel. -In referring to this, and, the Matin’s trial trip, he said she had been able to steam against a' strong wind and tide, and had proved herself quite equal to all that had been expected of her. Mr Stout, M.H.E., proposed “ Success to the good ship Matau in all voyages she may over prosecute,” which was drunk m.a bumper. Port Chalmers was reached shortly after four o’clock, and a stay for an hour was made. The return to town was made in 50min., the Rattray street wharf being reached at 6.15 p.m. The Matan’s keel was laid on the Ist of October, 1875, and she was launched on the 17th January last.

ARRIVAL OF THE SHIP WELLINGTON.

Tho ship ‘Wellington, which arrived off the Heads on Friday morning, was towed ap last night as far as the Quarantine Ground, where she came to anchor, and was boarded by the Health and Immigration officers, who shortly after cleared the vessel, the medical member of the Board .(Dr Drysdale) refusing to clear the ship before consulting tho Board of Health. The Wellington brings 318 souls, including fourteen cabin passengers, and during the voyage nearly aU the children suffered from whooping cough, while four cases of typhoid fevor had occurred, % oue of which is still raging. With this exception, the passengers are said to be healthy. Three births have laken place during the voyage, viz., Mrs M‘Call, Mrs M'Question, and Mrs Hunter, each of a son; while four deaths have been recorded, three children and one adult. The deaths were—December 30; John Taggote, agei seven months, from convulsions ; January 18, John Cameron, aged eighteen months, from pneumonia and bronchitis; January 28, Mrs Robert Miller, aged thirty-eight years, from pulmonary consumption; and on February 11, Thomas Smith, aged five months, from marasmus and diarrhoea. Captain Cowan reports leaving the Tail of the Bank December 18; went through the north tmssage, and cleared the land in twelve hours; thence she had a had time of it for fourteen days, the wind going round to the S.W., blowing a succession of heavy gales; the weather moderated on the 31st, and thence she had northerly winds, which took her right in to the N.E. trades, which proved light and poor and gave out in 3 N.; picked up the S.E. trades in 2 N., and crossed the equator on the 19th January in long. 25 W.; carried the S.E. trades to January 30th, and lost them in lat, 23 S.; thence she encountered a long spell of light variable weather; crossed the meridian of Greenwich on 10th February, hut was mot by adverse winds and weather, and did not pass the Cape Until the 19 th; got th*e westerlies on the 21st; passed Marian Island next Jay, and made fair running across the Southern Ocean, knocking off her easting in 48 S.; passed the Snares on the 14th inst. without sighting them, and, through thick weather, ran pnst Otago Heads, sighting her first land at Moeraki; thence she worked back and made Toiaroa Heads on Friday morning.
