DUNEDIN SAILORS’ HOME.

The second annual meeting was held in the Home this afternoon; present—the Mayor (in -the chair). Messrs Guthrie, Houghton, M-rct-r, Mills.-Martin, Ramsay, Walcott,, and Captain Thomson. The Chairman raid that, although tie report might co". be of so satisfactory a nature as • might 'he- expected by themselves and o hers outside, a gra*i r y:i gpn of that t e effo ts of the gentlemen who inangu atei the Horn ; had not been entirely unaucc ssfu ! , war afforded by the email am r ut lost during he ys; r. Of course » new undertaking had always difficulties to : co itend with, a-.d ebj.-ctions were boundto c»-op‘ op. Fur himself he might say that he was probably oneof th 1 greenest horns round the ta' le, so far as , em s concernei; but it was their duty as <ntizi. ns to render as-istneeto those in need. The master’s report, as follows, was .read;—

-As it has been.suggested that I should put in a report touching on the last year’s working of. the Sailors’ Home I am pleased to state that the many disadvantages lhave labored under, such as the old rickety , building, the former want of fencing, the opposition of sundry small boarding-house keepers, a certain class of seamen, who fancied (wrongly) that the establishment of a Sailors’ Home would have a tendency to reduce the seamen’s wages, &c., have been partly removed, and a certain amount of . prejudice been overcome, and I can now qoast of a better and more profitable class of hoarders. The total number inwards for the financial 'year ending February sth was .578, 565 haying left (faring that same period. I am quite certain that if a more suitable and commodious building could he procured, a Sailors’ -Hbnih Would boh decided success in Dunedin. It is not necessary for me to allude to the financial . report, which'is in your own hands. In conclusion I may state that the conduct of the seathen, whilst staying in the Home, has, with one or two exceptions, been of the most satisfactory character, lam confident the men fully appreciate . thj comfort they obtain here more than that afforded by the ordinary lodging-houses they have -mthortO’firequented, and that the Commissioner of Police will bear me out in saying that much less drunkenness has prevailed amongst the sailors of this porfc since the establishment of the Dnnedin Sailors’ Home.—l am, & c., ~ ~ , „ J.
