Auckland, February 21. Yesterday the Marquis of Normmby received the first congratulatory message by cable from the Govern >r of 'ew -outh v. ales.

William Fortune, a halt-paste, was brought np at the R M Court to '•ay charged with committing rape up n Catherine M'Kenzie, the wife of a laborer at Eas em Bush. According to the prosecutoi’a s atement the offence was committed one n'ght her husband was away from home, but she cann t swear as to the identity of the accuse t. Prisoner has been remanded for euht days.
