The Town Council oS irfmgton have made their first application
to the local Government Board for an advance, to enable them to purchase the property of the district gas companies. The local authorities of Llandudno are preparing to take over both the gas and water supply Of, that favorite and beautiful watering place. The Liverpool Town Council have appointed a gas committee, which has brought up a report, pointing out' that the profit derived by the Liverpool Gas Company for the present year was L 56.000; while the profit derived by ; . the Manchester Corporation from their gasworks, with a charge of 7d per I,oooft less;, was actually L37',oQo.in~excess of that made by the Liverpool Company." In the same connection it may le mentioned that the Town, Council of Aberdeen, whicb has possession of corporate works, bas reduced the price 2d per I,oooft for the year, and still sees its way to a handsome surplus. It has made a good coal contract; the consumers get the benefit at once. The rate- | payers of Ramsgate, at' a town's meeting,/ | have sanctioned the proposal of the local board to promote a measure for tbe compul- ' sory purchase of the Isle of Thanet Gas Company, and also of the Ramsgate works, and the progress of tbe Bill will be watch with interest by all the corporations and all the companies, for it is the first really proposal yet put forward. At Ramsgate the charge for gas is only 4s per I,oooft, but still the citizens'consider it expedient that such necessaries as light and water should be in their owfl hands.— vAfgus.' ______________
jA shocking accident happened j£ Major P&ins, near Benalla, on Friday, 2Sfth January, resulting in the death of a fine young man; named Peter Newton. The 'North-Eastern Ensign' relates that the deceased was engaged in feeding a threshingmachine. A slight stoppage occurred in thesujjply, and .on turning round to ascertain tb;e cause'his foot •• supped, and he: fell j between the revolving drums or beaters. The driving belt wais detached as quickly as possible, but not before fatal injuries were received, deceased's left arm and side beingA frightfully mangled'amongst the machinery, and his leg front the'knee downwards* being crushed into a shapeless mass. He left a wife and one childv A verdict of accidental death was returned.
