OVERLAND FROM MARTIN'S BAY.

Mi* .Robertson, the Martin's Bay mailman, reports m the ' Wakatip Mail' that tilings are gome on much as usual at the settle- ? ld , named John George and William Latham—men of experience on the Victonau as well as New Zealand fields —who left here at the begirujitQg of month on a prospecting tour, had reached as far as the settlement, before Mr. Robertson left. They areaaidtobe the first who have ever made the journeyoverland with ahorse, which they hadtaken with them for the purpose of packing provisions.. Getting over a few trifling mishaps, Eel Creek witnessed the most remarkable' adventure of the explorers. At this crossing—about three miles below Migh Falls Creek—the stream is very slulv gish, and its bed, which is about 70ft broad, is fall of mud and snags. The only means, therefore, of getting' over waa by a large tree<ti£own across - the length of which was some 80ft, with an average talking surface of about 10m. Nothing daunted our hardy pioneers "embarked" their faithful steed on to the " bridge "—the animal was not of much account otherwise they would not; have risked his life, which; they considered worth very Uttle on such a perilous undertaking,- but, wonderful to relate, he walked the plank and reached the opposite end quite safely. Blondin has acqu&ed a reputation for his extraordinary nerve and self-possession; but that cluinb animal deserves equal renown for his cool brairr, steady eye, strong nerve,' and unfaltering feet; and it is to be hoped!his lucky owners will never again say he is " no good." .
