A rather extraordinary case (says the 'Timaru Herald') has. came under our notice! Thomas Bassett, alias Tommy Dodd, who probably is as much deserving,of the cognomen "gaol bird" as any man about. Svas "wanted" in July, 1870, to answer a charge.of having assaulted one Neil Fleming, in Oamaru, and although, he ias served several terms of imprisonment since that time in this part of the Colony, it was not until a' day or two ago that he was identified as'the roan who committed the assaults alluded to. Hewas apprehended at Timaru on the charge, and has been remanded to Oamaru.
