CITY COUNCIL.
The following business .was transacted after we went tojpress yesterday:— , Messrs Marshall and Copeland wrote asking Eermisdon to'practice with tbeir hose half-an-our once a week, at the fire-plug opposite their gates. In cstße of fire, as they now stood, unless .the Council, granted them this privilege, their hose and appurtenances, which had already been the means of extinguishing two fires in the neighborhood that might otherwise have been-very serious, would be • entirely Useless. The Town Clerk at South Dunec'in, Mr Rankin, wrote on behalf of the South Dunedin Town Council, complaining— Of the tardiness and apparent neglect you have manifested in not having taken steps to remove the nuisance of the manure depot before now; and again to urge upon you the neoessity of doing so without delay, also for .your making provision for the disinfection of the Bame. lam authorised to state that our acting medical health officer has said that in all probability the two cases of scarlet fever. now; in our. midst have arisen from or have been . communicated by this Intolerable nuisance, the residence of the patients being in the immediate neighborhood of the depot. Tne Corporation tenants in Princes street Bomth, betwe- n' the Church Reserve Jind Police Btriet,_ wrote* offering (without prejudice) to move back in consideration.,of receiving comSnsation aggregating to a lump sum of L3,25Q. r Daniel black, lessee of the Gridiron Hotel, wrote demanding I«500 as compensation, pendent of his landlady (Mrs Martin). The motions of Cr. Reeves re Major Gordon r»port;ng upon the drainage and s *weragti of tha City and of 'Cr. LeAbt re permanent levels were earned.
On Ob. Campbell bringing under notice the deficiefit means of exit from the Temperance Mail, it was stated that notice had been given some tune ago to the Temperance Hall Oomwny to improve tho apiproaches, but no action had be«n taken. In consequence oE this, a Ucepße to conduct pujblic entertainments there bad been refused. 'lheTown Clerk was now instructed to take proceedings again** the comrany for allowing ontenainmeMs tn be given *m the hall, it bwnjp .unlicensed.
