VOLUNTEER INTELLIGENCE.
£ The .following were the highest scores inade by the Invercargill cadets at their district or Hare, 52 ; Sergeant Basatian, 46 : Corporal, Kingsland, 40. •
The Dunedin Nival Brigade! was inspected in rowing -and Bailing drill on Saturday after noon by Lieutenant Pell, - Apting-Adjutant. There were present two first-class petty officers and eleven guhfiers; P. 0., Jamieson being in charge. The crew haying been exercised in rowing, Captain Stavely, commanding the district, the Acting-Adjutant, and a few friends boarded the launch* where the crew were exercised in making and shortening sail at anchor. Having doublereefed’ the fohe and hiain sails, the mborings were slipped and the men exercised at their quarters for aii hbur and a hail. The boat, although’ a ton and a half short of her 1 bal : last, behaved splendidly! , The day was all that, conld, be desired, the wind blowing Strong and gusty enough from the southwest to'. necessitate • double-reefed canvas to work the boat in safety in her short ballast trim, and lively enough to give those of the crew forward wet jackets, with an occasional shower for those aft. In beating up to her moorings the crew were exer-; cised in. making sail under-weigh, when the i teefs were shook, put of the mainsail, and: rhe Defence then showed what she could do ’ under a press of canvas, working up to her; : anchorage in excellent style. The moorings j were picked up, the sails furled under in-! speotion, and a boat’s crew sent ashore with) Captain Stavely, Lieutenant Pell, and the visitors; and what may be ■ termed an after- ;■ noon’s hard work, combined with pleasure,) was brought to a close by the landing of ■ the crew, whom, we may remark, werein their undress uniform, which seems; very suitable for the work it' is intended.) (We are pleased to find the Naval Company 1 looking up again. Volunteering must be; taking a fresh start, as we are. informed that applications for admission into this Company) have been so numerous oflatethat Lieut.. Smith, the officer commanding, on last drill night had to postpone the consideration of several, nominations., With the appliances; at the command of the Brigade, and partis cularly with such a fine boat as the Defence to drill in, we feel satisfied from the esprit l de corps lately manifested that the Dunedin Naval Brigade will, ere long, be second ta no corps in the Colony, either in numbers or efficiency. ; 1 \
