It is true'a'bout one-half of the land offered for sale wai purchased; but who were the purchasers? All tne land sold, with the'exceptioti of fwo sections, fell into the hands' of the neighboring rurihblders. ' It is trpe there was'sharp bidding for Borne of the sectionp, r; but .the land would, have,been : sacrificed at even L 4 to L 5 an acre by. going into-the hands of-those-who have abeady' a surfeifrof it, ■ The present system of land sales may bo the , means of: b'rha^g'ih'.an'^Miihediaterevenile; but they are decidedly opposed"'in every respect to settlement. Had the same land been disof, on' deterred, payments' instead of going'to swell the already broad acres of the capitalists,! it wpu'd have given homes'and occupation; to fprty or fifty families.
