The bank returns for the quarter to 31st December last have been published. The amount of deposits held have increased by L 658.654, notwithstanding that the Government deposits are less by L 113.610 than they were at 31st December, 1874. Of this increase as less than L360,425bas been with the Bank of New Zealand, the private deposits in which bank have increased during the year by no less a sum than L 185,584. It would be interesting as well as instructive to know how much of this increase is due to the Australian branches of this bank. In other words, what amount ef Australian deposits are included iii their returns ? As evidence of tna satisfactory character of the returns, it may be mentioned that the increase in the amount of advances is by no means excessive when compared with the increase of deposits, being only L 732 260 Ihe only bank which has effected any material reductiou in their advances is the Union, who ha/e reduced the amount of accommodation to the public by L 156.000. The total amount of coin and bullion held has varied but littie during the past year, but the amounts held by the individual banks show considerable changes—the coin held by the Bank of New South Walesrexhibiting a decrease of L 207.703, while the others show an increase.— ' Evening Argus.' •
