CRICKET.
When our-reporter left the Oval on Saturday afternoon, the innings of A to K had terminated for 83 runs. L to Z, captained by Macdonnell, put together only 74, of which Lambert contributed 11 and Lathbury 14. The match between the City Guards Cadets and Barrett’s school resulted in a victory for the former, who scored. 24 and 54 against their opponents 31 and 25. CITIZENS V. PALMERSTON, The town team left Dune&in on Friday afternoon, and reached Palmerston at eleven the same evening. On arrival they were welcomed by some of the Palmerston team and conveyed to their quartes at Host Fagan’s (himself an enthusiastic cricketer), at whose hands they received every attention. ' The match was arranged to be com- ' menced at 10 am on Saturday, but at the appointed hour, when both teams were On the ground ready to begin, a most singular dispute occurred, which at one time appeared likely to end in the visitors returning to town without playing. The hitch t was caused by the Palmerston to the umipfre'chosen by the Citizens, _ because he was a member of the . Waikouaiti Club, though it was generally i Admitted that his knowledge of the game - was equal to that of anypliyer in the Province. ' We are informed that the Citizen's team, when- they requested Mr Nelines to act for them* were unaware-that a consider-
able amount of badfeeling exiatedbetweenthe Waikouaiti and Palmerston clubs, and, such being the case, they declined, and we think rightly, to get another umpire. They agreed, however, should any of their umpires’ decisions be disputed on reasonable ground to withdraw him. Thus an hour and a-half was wasted, and it was nearly noon before play was commenced. The Citizens won the toss and sent their opponents to the wickets. The play docs not call for any remark. The town team complain, and not without reason, if we are rightly informed, of the extraordinary decisions given by the Palmei’ston umpire, and of the refusal of the Palmerston Club to play the match out. We subjoin the scores :
In the evening the visiting team were entertained at dinner.
